Genre: Women’s Fashion

Here is a VOGUE magazine front cover featuring the famous Rihanna. Vogue is a traditional, successful, huge magazine company that sells millions of magazines per year. Firstly, Rihanna’s head is partially covering the title, showing that that magazine is comfortable not showing the full title, as it so popular many know what they are reading even if the title is covered by the main attraction. Furthermore, Rihanna is facing straight into the camera, using a direct mode of address to appeal to the readers and establish a bond with them. The full length body shot of Rihanna emphasises her outfit, and gives the reader an idea of what they should look like.

The pose Rihanna is taking, allows the audience to focus on different elements of the image, whether the loophole in the jeans or the frill coming from the sleeve of the top. This idea causes the reader to gain an insight into the full outfit and judge how it would appear on them. In addition, the famous singer, and actress being used will cause a surge in profits as Rihanna is extremely well known in every country, therefore many will want to read about what she has to say. The title block red print of the title “VOGUE” suggests seduction, and promiscuity as the colour red has those connotations, and the sharp print of the font suggests high quality, and elegance.

Vogue also stands for the popular style at a specific time, which further adds to the genre of the magazine relating to women’s fashion. Rihanna is also popular with the female population, and her name is written in red, bold letters emphasising her fame and promiscuity, as Rihanna is renown for her sexual dance moves featured in her videos, and the bold choice of lyrics in her songs. This anchorage text links to the main image of Rihanna striking a sultry pose.

The list following the “GO BOLD” title draws the reader in and covers a wide range of topics that will entice and reach a wide audience. The other text down the side of the magazine features other celebrities in a bold white font such as Karl Lagerfeld and Jessica Sarah Parker to further draw the readers attention to other big named celebrities, this is an example of media industries converging.

The phrase “MUST HAVE” is an incentive to encourage the reader to purchase the item, and make them seem as though they are missing out if they don’t have the item. This is done to try and isolate the reader to make them feel as though they have to buy something to fit in. This fits in with the Uses and Gratification theory, that if they identify with Rihanna they will buy her outfit, or the “MUST HAVE” shoes to associate themselves with popular, trendy celebrities.

The jargon of fashion e.g shoes, street chic, jacket further reinforces the genre of the magazine, as it is there to promote fashion ideas. This magazine clearly is targeted at women, particularly young women through the use of celebrities, fashion and colours.
